Multi-purpose pontoon conversion
The transformation of the multi-purpose pontoon NP459 into the specialized cable repair vessel Curo required meticulous engineering and structural modifications. Originally designed as a versatile work pontoon, NP459 was repurposed to meet the demanding requirements of subsea cable maintenance, ensuring its readiness for offshore cable repair projects.
Engineering Expertise
Saltwater Engineering was contracted by N-Sea to assist in the conversion of Curo. The conversion process involved securing essential cable repair equipment, including a 1400t carousel, loading tower, and cable chutes, while verifying deck strength to accommodate these additions. Due to the pre-existing foundation layouts, modifications were limited, requiring precise engineering solutions to maintain the vessel’s structural integrity.
Seafastening solutions were designed for efficiency, minimizing installation time while ensuring the safe transport and operation of heavy cable-handling tools. Comprehensive deck strength calculations were performed to guarantee the vessel could withstand operational loads without compromising safety or performance.
Hands-on engineering approach
Saltwater Engineering’s team worked closely with N-Sea and subcontractors, ensuring that all aspects of the conversion met the highest standards. Through direct collaboration and on-site inspections, the project was successfully completed within the designated timeframe. Engineers were also invited aboard Curo to observe their work in action, gaining invaluable insights for future mobilizations.
