Saltwater Engineering BV was contracted by WIND BV to complete a strength analysis for two cable tanks that were placed into the M/V Bremer Johanna. These cable tanks facilitated the transport of cables between Europe and North America.

The close cooperation between WIND and Saltwater resulted in a calculation procedure that meets both the theoretical and practical requirements. After determining the acceleration factors on the cargo load, which defined by the calculation methods specified in the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing, a 3D calculation model was generated. This calculation model allows for the determination of the expected worst case deflections and stresses that would occur due to a shift of the cargo.
 

Using the results of the calculations the cable tank was optimized to reduce the amount of material that is required to safely secure the cargo.
